Case Study
Reimagining a Historic Front
Porch for Modern Living
The homeowner of this eclectic, turn-of-the-century residence approached us with a clear vision. She wanted her front porch to feel more inviting and intentional, like an outdoor living room designed for gathering with family and friends.
At the same time, the renovation needed to respect historic guidelines and feel fully integrated with the home’s original architecture. Privacy, comfort, and authenticity were key concerns, along with addressing a failing front door that had become difficult to use.

Type: Residential front porch renovation
before the transformation:
A Porch That Fell Short of Its Potential
Before the renovation, the front porch lacked both function and refinement. Flimsy lattice panels sat on either side of the porch, offering minimal privacy and no real design presence. The space felt exposed due to the close proximity of neighboring homes, making it difficult to relax or gather comfortably.
The existing front door, while full of character, had reached the end of its useful life. It was difficult to open, close, and lock, requiring effort that no longer aligned with how the home was meant to be used day to day. While the porch had charm, it did not yet support the way the homeowner wanted to live in or enjoy the space.

the project plan:
Elevating the Porch While Honoring History
The plan focused on transforming the porch into a welcoming, enclosed-feeling space that still felt light and appropriate for the home’s era. Our team worked within historic guidelines to ensure every update respected the architecture and the surrounding neighborhood.
The design team proposed replacing the existing lattice with custom-designed privacy screens that extended from the porch railing up to the beam above. These screens were carefully designed to feel original to the house, not decorative additions. Inspiration was drawn from elegant outdoor living rooms, including references to the Newport, Rhode Island Tennis Hall of Fame, known for its refined use of screening and enclosure.
In parallel, the team planned to replace the deteriorating front door with a new solid mahogany door and sidelights that would feel like a natural evolution of the original rather than a direct replica.
the transformation

Custom Privacy Screens That Define the Space
Custom lattice privacy screens replaced the flimsy existing panels, extending from the porch railing to the beam above to create a stronger sense of enclosure.
Built with heavier, more substantial material, the screens provide meaningful privacy from neighboring homes while maintaining openness and airflow. Their refined proportions help soften the solidity of the stone construction, and the lattice filters light throughout the day, casting subtle shadows that add warmth and depth to the porch.
Circular Details That Bring Balance and Visual Energy
Two large circular forms were integrated into the end screens to bring order and visual rhythm to the space. These shapes introduce a sense of balance while playfully interrupting the regular lattice pattern, adding a moment of surprise without feeling decorative or out of place.
The result is a porch that feels composed and intentional, with architectural detail that enhances rather than competes with the home’s historic character.

A Front Door Replacement That Honors History While Improving Daily Life
Although the original front door had undeniable character, it had become difficult to operate and no longer met the homeowner's needs. Our team replaced it with a solid mahogany front door and sidelights that respected historic guidelines while fitting effortlessly into the home’s architectural language.
Rather than replicating the original exactly, the new door was designed as a kindred spirit, similar in scale, proportion, and material but refined for modern use. The natural wood finish complements the home’s stone exterior, restoring both ease of use and a sense of arrival that feels authentic, secure, and timeless.
Overcoming Challenges:
Navigating Historic Guidelines with Experience
One of the primary challenges involved navigating historic preservation requirements. While the team initially proposed stone steps and a natural stone overlay on the porch floor to further enhance the front elevation, the local historical society did not approve this portion of the plan.
Rather than forcing a compromised solution, we were able to pivot thoughtfully. Approval was granted for a new stone walkway to replace the deteriorating existing path, which had become a tripping hazard due to its raised connection to the public sidewalk. This adjustment improved safety and curb appeal while remaining fully compliant with preservation guidelines.
Our deep experience working with historic homes allowed us to adapt quickly, preserve the integrity of the design, and still deliver meaningful improvements to the property.
The Final Result: A Porch That Feels Like It Was Always There
What began as a porch with limited privacy, aging materials, and functional challenges is now a refined outdoor living space that feels intentional, welcoming, and historically appropriate. The new screens provide enclosure without heaviness, the front door restores ease of use and security, and the overall composition brings balance and calm to the home’s façade.
The renovation enhances how the homeowner uses the space, creating a comfortable place to gather while preserving the house's architectural story. Most importantly, the porch now looks as though it has always been part of the home, a seamless blend of thoughtful design, craftsmanship, and respect for history.
