An Extended Galley Kitchen
Kalorama DC
Built in the 1970’s, the original floor plan of this luxury townhome centered the kitchen between a flex room at the front of the house and a family room at the rear. Being so positioned, it was cut off from natural light and felt disconnected from the rest of the home. Designers removed a wall of the front room and turned it into a breakfast room to capture natural light from existing full light patio doors. At the other end, they opened up a half wall to connect the kitchen to the family room and gain views of the courtyard from the wall of patio doors beyond. Also, they widened the opening to the hallway, adding a gracefully arched opening to improve connections between kitchen and the rest of the house.
