The homeowners expressed a whimsical disregard for the traditional Dutch Colonial style of their Cleveland Park home. Their furnishings were modern and they’d already built a contemporary style sun room addition. Our designers followed clean, contemporary lines for the design of the new modern porch addition. At the same time, we sought to achieve a visually pleasing relationship in the tension between old and new. Although the lines of the porch are contemporary, the hefty white posts and trim work soften the break in style and quietly refer to the traditional origins of the house. A custom panel door by Solar Innovations functions like a glass wall. Door panels lay over each other when the door is open position making the new kitchen and porch spaces as one. The high west wall of the porch throws more sky light into the interior.     Photographer: Kenneth Wyner
