The owners of this elegant Chevy Chase DC Victorian had stopped using their deck because every time they went out there it would require a full scale clean up. The mature trees in the yard, lovely though they are, unleashed blizzards of pollen each spring. And throughout the year leaves, branches, seed pods and so on littered the deck and deck furniture. The original idea was to convert the deck into a screened porch addition and build a patio for an outdoor fireplace. But they decided to incorporate the fireplace feature into a more spacious porch. The porch design includes glass panels that cover the screens in autumn to keep cold wind out and fireplace warmth in.   Photographer: Morgan Howarth
