ADVANCING OLD WORLD CRAFTSMANSHIP

Though the clients loved their 1937 brick colonial, it wasn’t able to accommodate large gatherings of friends & family—and they very much wanted to entertain at home.

They felt the rooms were disconnected from each other— there seemed to be no place in the house to experience "openness".

Goals

The clients wanted a renovation that would pay tribute to the original builders of the home and not sacrifice architectural detail & craftsmanship for size.

They wanted—

  • additions to complement—not overpower— the existing house
  • an assortment of different sized rooms (small to large)—each possessing a unique character and function
  • circulation patterns that would make intuitive sense as one travels room to room

Solutions

The vastness of the 1st floor addition is controlled by ceiling treatments in each of three areas:  kitchen (tray ceiling), breakfast room (vaulted) & great room (revealed beam).

The size and scale of new and existing spaces is well balanced—the rooms are different sizes and possess distinctly different characters.
